“There may not be snow in San Antonio…”

You knew it was Christmas when the family took that annual trip into downtown San Antonio to see the Joske’s Department Store “Fantasy Toyland” window display. It was easy to stand for hours with your nose pressed up against the window, watching the toy trains moving along their tracks through the miniature winter wonderland. The joy that this magical display provided was endless. Elaborate scenes like these are magical because they might possibly be the farthest things from reality.

What does Christmas look like for a lonely Tia, alone in her house on the Westside with no one to take her to mass? What does Christmas look like for a hard working Mexicana on the Southside that has to make gifts appear out of thin air for her children? What happens when dad has too much to drink? What happens when the isolation gets to be too much?

Watch as we honor the true stories of our gente during what is supposed to be the happiest time of the year. Stories told through movement, poetry and song. Starring S.T. Shimi, Cros, Lisa Suarez, and Dino Foxx.

This popular site-specific series based on an original concept by Kim Corbin and Sandra Dunn returns with brand-new works in the front windows of Jump-Start Theater. Co-produced by Sandra Dunn & Monessa Esquivel, this season, four different Jump-Start artists create one-night only performance/ multi- media installations that are meant to be viewed from outside the theater.

End Time:
Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at 10:00pm

Description

This show features unique and creative twists on a holiday classic, the wreath. Originally used by both Greeks and Romans, wreaths symbolized life, healing and strength, in addition to remembering the deceased. Appropriating the custom, Christians used the object as a sign for the never-ending love for Christ. Unfortunately, though, wreaths are now primarily used as a vehicle to hang tacky stuff on doors. Robot Art Gallery wants to change that.

6:00 pm to 9:00 pm
About Me:
THE SAN ANTONIO CREATIVE COLLABORATIVE FOR DIVERSITY IN THE ARTS – a collaborative comprised of Anchor Partners, Community Partners, Artists, Performers, Sponsors, Volunteers, and the City of San Antonio, announce a very special event: “Una Noche de La Gloria – Contemporary Art in the Cultural Zone”. La Gloria happen this fall, October 10, 2009, from 6:00PM to Midnight in San Antonio’s historic Avenida Guadalupe Westside Arts District. “La Gloria” is an ambitious project which encourages the “collecting” of locally produced fine art via an exhibition environment and the discovery of contemporary performance artists via music, film, and literature.

Created and organized by the Contemporary Art and Literature Organization (CALO) and sponsored by District 5 Councilwoman Lourdes Galvan, “Una Noche de La Gloria” is an arts exposition and community building activity. La Gloria was created to advance cultural adjustment and growth and promote the undercurrent markets of the arts and culture in San Antonio’s Xicano and Latino communities. While the main focus of CALO is to promote creative individuals, La Gloria will showcase “senior citizen” master artists and give aspiring artists a chance to participate amongst their peers, thereby bridging the generation gap and pro-actively passing down values that have sustained local artist for generations.

We believe the best way to support creative individuals is to build bridges between our City’s artists, its citizens and visitors enabling commerce through the arts while fostering a healthy and prosperous creative economy that strengthens an authentic San Antonio artistic and cultural community.

Join us this fall for the unforgettable “Una Noche de La Gloria – Contemporary Art in the Cultural Zone” in “el mero gueso” – the Westside of San Antonio.

San Antonio, Texas – August 12, 2009 G2 Art Sight is pleased to announce the solo exhibition of photography by Rodolfo Choperena, September 11th – October 3, 2009. The exhibition, U N E X P E C T E D, showcases Choperena’s psychedelic and lyrical photographs which opens at the gallery with a public reception during the Fourth Tobin Hill Art Alliance “Art on the Hill” art walk, on Friday – September 11th from 6pm – 10pm. The artist will be in attendance.
In his inaugural exhibition, Rodolfo Choperena bends and manipulates light by utilizing various photography techniques. The resulting images contain striations that move in varying intervals and rhythms, challenging one’s perception of the concept of reality through exploring positive and negative space.
While manipulating the camera’s movement in relation to a specified light source, in addition to changing exposure and aperture settings, the body of work pushes the boundaries of perception to create organic, free forms in a lyrical fashion.
These large scale photographs are inspired by nature and the artists’ immediate surrounding environment. The representative vantage point hosts many personal objects which make each photograph a direct reflection of Choperena’s daily life.
For more information on the exhibition or to arrange an interview with the artist, please contact the artist directly.

Think Marie Antoinette meets Punk “Bling-Bling Fling 2009″
Ten years ago, a group of diverse women came together with the shared goal of creating a community center to promote women’s health and provide valuable resources to low-income women on the East and Southeast side of San Antonio. These ambitious women founded the Martinez Street Women’s Center. On October 24, 2009 the Martinez Street Women’s Center will celebrate 10 years of service to communities in need with the sixth-annual “Bling-Bling Fling,” its signature social and fundraising event. The evening will feature the best in local music, cuisine, and a silent auction presenting art work from some of San Antonio’s best – you will not want to miss it.
