New work by Ansen Seale delves in to a world accessible only via the machine he has created. A special digital camera records only things that move or change (flux). Water is the main subject, but even that is only a medium for reflection and transmission of imagery. Realism and abstraction co-exist in a swirling vortex of color and light.

September 9th, Ansen Seale: luminous flux Art show opening and reception for the artist: 5:30 to 9:30pm Show will run through October 13.

Movies by Moonlight at HemisFair Park Wins Best Downtown Event

Voted “Downtown Best Event” by San Antonio Downtown Alliance

“Appropriately located in HemisFair Park (with free parking) Movies by Moonlight offered the community an opportunity to view films in an urban greenspace. Thanks to the generosity of corporate sponsors each month between June and October, the free outdoor cinema event featured selections ranging from blockbuster to old-time classics and horror films. Clamp Light Studios & Gallery is proud to present Lunch with Elsa 1924 – 1933, a collaborative exhibit of artists Brianna Burnett and Kimberly Rumfelt. As part of Foto Septiembre USA, works will be photographic and mixed media. The exhibition tells the story of friendship and family through the eyes of one woman’s journal. The artists found almost 10 years of daily entries from personal journals covering 1924 to 1933 and have created work in response to it.

Brianna Burnett received her MFA in photography from Texas Tech University in 2008. Her work is rooted in the act of storytelling and interpretation of narratives. Kimberly Rumfelt gained her MFA in ceramics at East Carolina University in 2009 where she developed work inspired by the domestic and its objects. Together the two artists have combined their knowledge and research of the human condition and developed a body of work inspired by another time and an intriguing story.

Two to Tango in concept is bringing two artists together; whose work
compliments one another. The artists are invited to come into The
Hausmann Millworks Finishing Room Gallery, and showcase their works.
Two to Tango also hopes to introduce artists to one another whom might
not have considered the other individual’s work, untill now! Two to
Tango is a bridge built to foster community and conversation.

Louis Vega Trevino:

Louis Vega Trevino’s painting reflects a deep understanding of
historical precedents.  Without any derivative step, he has built upon
a number of important, painterly languages to evolve a style that is
instantly recognizable as uniquely his own.  Trevino’s painting
recalls not only the atmospheric color fields of Mark Rothko and
Julies Olitski, but also that indeterminate margin where color field
interests
merge with the geometric and optical abstraction of Gene
Davis
and Richard Anuszkiewicz.  It is in that margin that Trevino’s
work finds its form, an area once explored by Morris Louis and which
Trevino’s color-charged compositions have revived and redefined.

Trevino’s painting is something of a paradox:  balancing cool analysis
with a hot pursuit of color relationships in which he blurs the
distinction between color, line and form such that those elements seem
to merge and deconstruct in an astonishing blend of earthy umbers,
orchids and sienna’s deployed against jewel-like hues that are only
primary in relation to one another.  Trevino’s daring approach to
color relations breaks new ground in the history of colorists, a
tradition in which he is rapidly establishing a secure and intriguing
position.”

Kim Bishop:

Kim Bishop has been a working artist and high school art instructor
for many years.  Her most recent shows have been at the Flight Gallery
and the Blue Star Contemporary Art Center in 2009 and 2010. According
to Bishop, her large scale paintings are conceptual narratives of
moments and experiences in her own life.  Her latest works focus on
contrasting colors and textures to create a sense of spatial movement
and depth which consequently results in an overall visual experience
for the viewer.

Hausmann Millworks is honored to show both Louis Vega Trevenio and Kim
Bishop September 10 – October 10,2010.

Fantastic Fuerzas/Forces investigates the integration of comics into contemporary artistic practice. For many Latino artists it is a way to discuss pop culture’s mainstream choices. For others, it is a way to discuss America’s mass media manipulation into marginal worlds. A common thread is the universal dive into humor, commerciality, and sociological fronts, resulting in sometimes-confrontational questions regarding our future.

“I’d rather get fired than quit.”
A two-part exhibition presented by FL!GHT and Blue Star Contemporary Art Center.

A few months ago, one of our favorite artists inquired if and how it would be possible for a person to abandon fine art altogether.

“You can keep your wine-and-cheese crowd,” he announced on Facebook, only a week or so before confirming his participation in this exhibition. Apparently exiting the “art game” isn’t as simple as renouncing your citizenship, but it must still be possible.

Are there twelve steps that include acknowledging a problem that also happens to be an INCURABLE affliction (tempered only by communal chain-smoking and “serenity” prayers)?

For most of us, the urge to make art is something primal like the drive to eat or fuck, so hypnosis or acupuncture would be a waste of time/money. Electroshock therapy seems too much of a scary, unethical relic, and graphic design too slippery of a slope.

An office job might have been an effective remedy many decades ago, but today anything/everything is an art material (e.g. break-room condensation). Maybe the only way out is “termination,” but we would strongly advise against playing in the street. You’ll risk being labeled a “performance artist” if VIA helps end your career.

I’d rather get fired than quit. is a two-part exploration of an artist’s options (or lack thereof) and the creative freedom unleashed when utter failure is an acceptable (or even a preferred) outcome.

Ed Saavedra Justin Parr
www.edsatx.com www.justinparr.com

—-

“First of all, don’t beat yourself up. As I said, getting fired can happen to the best of us. Don’t dwell on it. Instead, focus on what you are going to do next and how you are going to find another job. Keeping in mind that another hurdle – the stigma of being fired – has just been added to your job search. That said, there are ways you can address this issue and put it in at least a neutral, if not a positive, light.”

Alison Doyle, “You’re Fired: How to Handle a Termination”

“They call me ocioso. I’d rather get fired than quit.
I get unemployment, you work and we making the same shit.”

Immortal Technique, “Obnoxious” from Revolutionary, Vol. 2

“You’ve lived too long in New York, I told her. There are other worlds. Other kinds of dreams. Dreams in which failure is feasible. Honorable. Sometimes even worth striving for. Worlds in which recognition is not the only barometer of brilliance or human worth. There are plenty of warriors that I know and love, people far more valuable than myself, who go to war each day, knowing in advance that they will fail. True, they’re less successful in the most vulgar sense of the word, but by no means less fulfilled.

The only dream worth having, I told her, is to dream that you will live while you’re alive and die only when you’re dead.”

Arundhati Roy

“Firms that wish for an employee to exit of his or her own accord, but do not wish to pursue firing or forced resignation, may degrade the employee’s working conditions, hoping that he or she will leave ’voluntarily.’ The employee may be moved to a different geographical location, assigned to an undesirable shift, given too few hours if part time, demoted (or relegated to a menial task), or assigned to work in uncomfortable conditions. Other forms of manipulation may be used, such as being unfairly hostile to the employee, and punishing him or her for things that are deliberately overlooked with other employees.

Often, these tactics are done so that the employer won’t have to fill out termination papers in jurisdictions without at-will employment. In addition, with a few exceptions, employees who voluntarily leave generally cannot collect unemployment.”

Wikipedia.com, “Termination of employment”

“I’m freakin’ serious…I’m done sucking and all that crap, I’m just gonna quit…for good….I dunno, it’s just that my art’s bland and will never improve…So really, I dunno anymore…I’m gonna take off my stuff and everything tomorrow…”

“I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”

Thomas Edison

“Many artists face rejection, lack of interest in their art, ignorance of what ’hoops’ they must ’jump through’ in order to make it as an artist, and generally lots less interest in art than in sports. Given all this, the rate of artists dropping out and quitting art is high.”

The Urban Art Retreat’s homepage

“Just once it might be instructive to pretend you’re accepting an award for failure, just to see who you would thank.”

Robert Brault

“If you’ve ever worked at an office, it’s very odd when people get fired. You hear rumors. Speculation. Then the official explanation. Then you never see/mention them again. Back to work.”

Hills Snyder: Casual Observer
September 30 – November 14, 2010

Hills will create this work in an open studio environment at Blue Star Contemporary Art Center throughout the month of September, with opening receptions, Thursday September 30 and First Friday, October 1, 2010, 6 – 9 pm.

Fourth in a series of projects derived from his 1997 Song 44, Casual Observer will allow ample time for the lackadaisical viewer to convince themselves that something is happening. Visitors to the gallery might even chance upon the artist with guitar, singing a song or two, possibly with collaborators.

The project seems to ask, what flavor is your favorite neutrino? How heavy is it really, all this small talk?

Meanwhile, The Baguette Bomber continues to prove that the god machine just can’t catch a break. A bird dropping a piece of bread onto outdoor machinery has been blamed for a technical fault at the Large Hadron Collider which saw significant overheating in sections of the mighty particle-punisher’s subterranean 27-km super-cooled magnetic doughnut.

Chocolate or glazed? — the flavor question just won’t go away.

Una Noche de La Gloria

Posted by thomas-cummins on 25 Aug 2010 | Tagged as: upcoming events

Sat, Oct 9
6:00 pmto11:59 pm

THE CONTEMPORARY ART AND LITERATURE ORGANIZATION announce a very special event: “Una Noche de La Gloria – Contemporary Art in the Cultural Zone”. La Gloria will happen this fall, October 9, 2010, from 6:00PM to Midnight in San Antonio’s historic Avenida Guadalupe Westside Arts District. “La Gloria” is an ambitious project which encourages the “collecting” of locally produced fine art via an exhibition environment and the discovery of contemporary performance artists via music, film, and literature.

Created and organized by the Contemporary Art and Literature Organization (CALO) and sponsored by District 5, “Una Noche de La Gloria” is an arts exposition and community building activity. La Gloria was created to advance cultural adjustment and growth and promote the undercurrent markets of the arts and culture in San Antonio’s Xicano and Latino communities. While the main focus of CALO is to promote creative individuals, La Gloria will showcase “senior” master artists and give aspiring artists a chance to participate amongst their peers, thereby bridging the generation gap and pro-actively passing down values that have sustained local artist for generations.

We believe the best way to support creative individuals is to build bridges between our City’s artists, its citizens and visitors enabling commerce through the arts while fostering a healthy and prosperous creative economy that strengthens an authentic San Antonio artistic and cultural community.

Join us this fall for the unforgettable “Una Noche de La Gloria – Contemporary Art in the Cultural Zone” in “el mero gueso” – the Westside of San Antonio.

Artist Foundation of San Antonio Awards

In 2010, the Foundation will make its fifth cycle of awards to artists residing in Bexar County, Texas. Each award is for $5,000 and is made for the creation of new, original work. The awards are designed to recognize artistic achievement, dedication to an artistic discipline and the potential for further professional development. Awards are made for a proposed project, which may already be in progress but should be completed by the end of the grant period of one year. Prior to receiving award funds, artists must sign a contract with the Foundation that specifies certain responsibilities. These responsibilities are found in the application process documentation and are intended to ensure that the award funds will be used in a manner that satisfies the Foundation’s charitable purposes.

Applications are ONLY accepted via the online application here at artistfound.org.
No applications will be accepted via FAX, e-mail, courier, mail nor ANY other delivery methods.
E-mail info@artistfound.org if applying online is not possible for you.

The purpose of the Artist Foundation of San Antonio is to enrich our artistic and economic fabric by providing monetary awards to individual artists, across diverse disciplines, thereby advancing their creative enterprise and the arts in our community.

While there are many organizations that provide funding to arts organizations, the Foundation is the only organization in our area that distinguishes itself with the sole objective of giving to individual artists.

We believe that by granting awards and recognition to our artists the art market in San Antonio and Bexar County will grow, diversify and prosper. Artists are in fact small business owners and an important factor in economic development. Cities across this country have awakened to the fact that vibrant artistic communities draw not only tourists, but also employers and talented employees.
